How Bad is the Obesity Crisis

Nearly one-third of the world’s population is overweight or obese. The rise in obesity has been gradual but constant across the globe, with the latest estimates putting the number of obese individuals across the globe at 2.1 billion. Approximately 3.4 million adults die each year as a result of complications from obesity. A person is considered obese if they have a body mass index (BMI) of over 30.

A recent analysis of trend data from 188 countries shows how obesity has risen over the last three decades at a substantial pace, presenting a major public health epidemic in both developed and developing countries.

Today in the United States, nearly one in three children and two in three adults struggle becasue they are overweight or obese. The overall social effects of obesity are immense: higher health care costs, reduced productivity, lower tax revenues, higher tax outlays, among many other ill-effects of obesity. Over $168 billion of the US national health care bill is due to the effects of obesity. The current generation of US children is – for the first time ever – projected to have shorter life expectancies than their parents.

-Obesity is linked to more than 60 chronic diseases.
-Only 12% of adults and 2% of children eat a healthy diet consistent with US federal nutrition recommendations.


More than 40 medical conditions are associated with obesity. Individuals who have obesity are at risk of developing one or more of these serious medical conditions. The most prevalent obesity-related diseases are the following:

• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Gallbladder disease
• Osteoarthritis
• Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
• Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon

There are many causes that directly and indirectly contribute to overweight or obesity. Behavior, environment, and genetics are among the main contributors to obesity. These three have been identified as the main causes of complications with treating the obesity epidemic.



It’s easy to develop bad eating habits in today’s fast-paced environment. Fast food goes with a fast life. We also tend to put exercise at the bottom of our list of daily activities. That means for many of us, exercise gets skipped more often than not.

People are consuming more calories on average than they di even just a decade ago. The increase in caloric intake and that much of that intake is in the form of unhealthy food, decreased the amount and quality of the nutrients we have consumed.

While the vast majority of people are consuming more calories, they are not adding enough physical activity. Physical activity is an important element in modifying and shaping our other behaviors. When we feel physically healthy we are more apt to make better food choices. When we don’t feel good, we reach out for the comfort foods. The time-devouring monsters of television, computers and other technologies discourage physical activity and add to the problem of obesity in our society.


Environment plays a key role in shaping an individual’s habits and lifestyle. There are many environmental influences that impact our health decisions. Today’s society has developed a more sedentary lifestyle. Walking has been replaced by driving cars, physical sports have been replaced by gaming, and nutrition has been overcome by convenience and fast foods.


Science has demonstrated that genetics play a role in weight. Genes can cause certain disorders which result in obesity. However, not all individuals who are prone to obesity become affected by it. Research is currently underway to determine which genes contribute most to obesity.

The most common methods used to measure obesity is Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference. There is no perfect method for measuring obesity, however, these two indicators are most commonly used by clinicians.

BMI (body mass index)

BMI is a measurement used to indicate obesity and morbid obesity in adults. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by his or her height in meters squared. An adult with a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese.

Waist Circumference

Waist circumference is a less-common method used to measure obesity in an individual. This simple measurement indicates obesity and morbid obesity in adults by measuring the total circumference of the waist. To find your waist circumference, wrap a tape measure around the area above your hip bone and below your rib cage.

For females, a waist circumference of 35 inches or greater is considered unhealthy. For men, a waist circumference of 40 inches or greater is considered unhealthy.

How can weight problems and obesity be reduced?
Obesity, as well as its related diseases, is preventable. Supportive environments and communities are fundamental in shaping people’s choices, helping them make healthier eating choices and participate in regular physical activity.

On an individual level, people can:
• Limit energy intake from total fats and sugars;
• Increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains, and nuts;
• Engage in regular physical activity (60 minutes a day for children and 150 minutes per week for adults).
